Diagnostics

Diagnostics

Diagnostic tests are meant to assist in the diagnosis of a particular condition based on your existing symptoms.  Your provider may order diagnostic tests to help rule out or identify a condition.  Many of those diagnostic tests can be done right in your provider’s office.

EKG

Your provider may perform an EKG (electrocardiogram) during your physical exam if you have any high risk factors or symptoms. This is a test that measures the electrical activity of the heart.  Through this test, we are able to determine if your heart is beating too fast, too slow or just right. We can also determine if there is a portion of your heart that is being overworked. The test does not hurt, nor does it harm you – no electricity enters into your body.

Most EKGs done in our office are for adults. In rare occasions, we may perform an EKG on a child. Typically, however, we would send a child with any symptoms to a cardiologist.

Holter Monitor

A Holter monitor is a machine that continuously records the heart’s rhythms. The monitor is worn for 24 – 48 hours during normal activity. Patches are stuck to your chest and attached to a small recording monitor.

The monitor runs on batteries, and can be carried in a pocket or pouch worn around your next or waist. While you wear the monitor, it records your heart’s electrical activity, which your doctor will review when you return to the office.

Pulmonary Function Test(PFT)

Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) measure how well your lungs work. This includes how well you are able to breathe and how effective your lungs are in bringing oxygen to the rest of your body. Your doctor will be able to perform these tests in our office if you are having any symptoms of lung problems.

Ultrasound

General Ultrasounds

Ultrasound imaging uses high frequency sound waves to produce images of internal organs. If your provider suspects a condition that can be further evaluated by ultrasound, you will be given an order to have that procedure done.

PRISM Medical Group has an ultrasound machine on site, and an ultrasound technician available during regular business hours. Depending on your insurance, we may be able to get you an appointment right away.

Vascular or Arterial Doppler Ultrasounds

Vascular ultrasounds are used to view the blood flow in your legs, arms and neck and evaluate blood flow. If your provider suspects a blood clot or reduced blood flow, you will be given an order to have this procedure done.

PRISM Medical Group has an ultrasound machine on site, and a vascular technician available during regular business hours. Depending on your insurance, we may be able to get you an appointment right away.
